A Good Bunch

To start week 2 I began to explore the Assignment Bank to see what my options were for this week! I started in Visual assignment and found what I thought was the perfect one for me.

I chose the The Brady Bunch assignment because once I saw it I knew what I was going to do. The objective of this assignment was to take the legendary square icon of the hit show The Brady Bunch and make it your own. I chose to make my “bunch” with my roommates. We named our house the Fridge because it is a big white box and a fridge sort of resembles that. It seemed only necessary to call ourselves the snacks if we lived in the fridge… hence the picture below.

Week 2 Assignment 1

When I chose this assignment I wasn’t quite sure how I would put all of the pictures together, but then I decided to use PowerPoint because it was the most simple. First I picked out the pictures I wanted to use for each of us, then I took a picture of our house. Then I pasted the house in the middle and placed our headshots around it. Once I fixed the sizes of the pictures I added titles.

This assignment was really fun to do and honestly, I think it fit perfectly. I knew how to work PowerPoint so I didn’t run into any issues. The most time consuming part of this assignment was finding the pictures for each of us. I chose each one of my roommates because we all live together and make one “family” just as the Brady family became one family.

Week One Summary

This week I started with reading the directions multiple times. I started with creating all my social media accounts; twitter, sound cloud, and Flickr, I already had a YouTube account. After setting all of my account up I attempted to crate my domain. I struggled to get Domain of Ones Own to work the way I wanted it to and honestly got really frustrated. I have never made a Domain of Ones Own so I had to watch many videos and ask lots of questions. I ended up taking a trip to the Digital Knowledge Center to get some assistance. The DKC was super helpful and got my website working! I decided to make a subdomain for DS106 just in case I wanted to use my website for additional class or purpose. During my appointment at the DKC we worked through all the instructions and got my blog registered to the class site.

I started building my social media posts after I got my website figured out. I started on twitter with a simple introduction. Then I moved to Flickr. I decided to use Flickr instead of Instagram because I didn’t want to make my instagram public. I uploaded pictures of me and my friends and family to add to my introduction blog post. I headed to Sound Cloud next to make a playlist of some of my favorite songs. I ended with Youtube because I was having a hard time deciding what to post. Then I remembered a video that I took over the summer when I threw a small surprise party for my roommate during COVID times. I added them all to my multimodal introduction post

I really enjoyed making albums on Flickr and I will probably continue to do so in the future. Making playlists is something I do when I am bored so making one on sound cloud was fun! I think I enjoyed making the albums and playlists because I love to organize things.

I started the Bob Ross video on Wednesday night and I loved it! Watching the video made me feel relaxed and wish that I was good at painting. He made it look so effortless. This video was only the third Bob Ross video I have ever watched and I would love to watch more. I really enjoyed this assignment.

When I started to create my goals they came easy. I knew exactly what I was striving for in this class. I started the week with frustration but now I am at ease and I have a lot of excitement for the rest of this semester.

Overall, week one wasn’t horrible. I was really nervous about how well I would do in this class, but once I figured things out I feel a lot more calm. Once I figured out how Word press works I could just “plug and chug” all my blog posts. I am excited to see what else I learn throughout this course and finding new ways to be creative!

Goals for ds106

I have a few goals for this class. My first goal is to be comfortable using WordPress since this is my first time using it. My second goal is to stay on top of all the assignments and not procrastinating on my work. My third goal is to be able to learn multiple new ways to describe myself. I am hopeful that by the end of the semester I will be able to accomplish all of these goals and have fun while do so.

I’m Haylie and I’m from Stephens City Va. I am a senior American Studies major and in the elementary education program. After completing my undergrad I will staying for one more year to get my master degree in elementary education.

Besides being a student, I am a peer mentor for first year students at UMW, an ambassador for the College of Education, and help lead a college ministry off campus!

When I have free time I love to hang out with my friends and family and listen to music. One of my favorite things to do is celebrate birthdays especially with my friends. This video is when I threw my roommate a surprise 22nd COVID birthday party!

I will listen to almost anything, but I prefer Christian, Country, and pop music. Driving down backroads with the windows down, wind blowing, and music playing is one of my favorite feelings! This is a playlist that has some of my favorite songs that make me happy!

The Joy of ds106

I watched “Forest River” and I was hooked through the whole video. Bob Ross has a way of making painting look effortless and so peaceful. This was only the 3rd video of Bob Ross painting I have watched and I am so glad I got to. There were two “ideas” that caught my attention while he was painting. One being that painting allows us to use our imagination and escape reality. Painting is all about bringing out happiness. Bob says when he paints there are “no bad things here” and I just really loved that. Often times when I think about painting or drawing I think of it as an outlet from stress or other distractions in life. The second idea that grabbed my attention was when you paint, unlike in real life, if you don’t like something you just change it. When you paint you can change anything you want and it is all in your control. In the real world you have to think about consequences, emotions and many of aspects before changing certain things in life.

Hello world!

Hi! I’m Haylie, a senior at UMW majoring in American Studies and Elementary Education. I plan to be an elementary school teacher!
